Ridley American Education Week

During American Education Week, the Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU) honored Leedom Elementary School for its exceptional Autistic Support program, celebrating the school’s unwavering commitment to inclusion and empowerment.

Leedom Elementary has emerged as a beacon of inclusive education within the Ridley School District, fostering an environment where students with autism are embraced, celebrated, and given the tools to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Starting with just two specialized classes, the program has expanded to include seven classrooms, including two full kindergarten classes introduced this year. As the district’s central hub for students requiring supplemental or full-time support, Leedom plays a critical role in the educational journey of children transitioning from early intervention services.

Seamless Integration and Community Building

What sets Leedom Elementary apart is its focus on integration. Students in the Autistic Support program participate in both specialized instruction and mainstream classroom activities, fostering meaningful peer interactions. From reading groups to science experiments, students with autism actively engage alongside their classmates, with peers naturally stepping in to offer help and encouragement.

This inclusive model not only enhances learning outcomes but also cultivates empathy and understanding across the school community. Upper-grade students receive tailored support as they prepare to transition to middle school, with school counselors and behavioral specialists playing key roles in easing this pivotal shift.

Leedom's approach extends beyond academics, emphasizing the holistic development of every student. The school’s physical education teacher ensures that all students, regardless of ability, are included in activities, further embedding the ethos of acceptance and belonging.

A Growing Legacy of Excellence

Leedom’s success has earned it a reputation as a trusted partner for families seeking high-quality support for their children. The Autistic Support team’s dedication to creating individualized learning plans, celebrating student milestones, and fostering a culture of inclusion is setting a standard for excellence.

As Leedom Elementary continues to lead the way in inclusive education, its impact resonates far beyond its walls, inspiring other schools and communities to embrace the transformative power of acceptance and support.
